Benny Sings – You Love Me
Joline van Berkestijn isn’t a professional singer. However, she was invited to the studio by Benny Sings. As a result of this invitation, they produced “You Love Me”, which is a duet with his wife, who he has said will be his favourite track on the upcoming album and the first track of it. It is also the last single released before the release of 22 Durnham Dew, which is due to arrive at stores on September 25th through both Stones Throw/Sings Records.
In the choruses, the duo make the large claim (the “biggest” being “I have never been loved like this before”) however the remainder of the song works hard to prove this by keeping everything small. In other words, the verses and pre-chorus take in things such as collecting Pokémon cards from the floor while cleaning, packing lunch for work or school, and remembering a Wednesday simply because it happened. This is how it accomplishes this: no metaphors are used, instead two people are simply telling you about their real life week.
It fits the shape of everything he’s released this year. Castle (W46) takes a home renovation project and uses it to illustrate feeling tired and making it through. Real Person (W08), featuring Elijah Fox, illustrated the dualities of love using much more abstract ideas. The arrangement of his mothers depression in Parachute (W26) under a disco setup. His daughter wanders into the recording session for 22 Durnham Dew (W31) and stays on the record. “You Love Me” is by far the most straightforward of the four releases; there are no framing devices at all. It simply features him and his wife. He also produced and edited the video himself. The video was filmed while they were traveling in Paris.
